Roger has considerable experience of working collaboratively and effectively with all parties to provide expert direction and strategic guidance on scheme matters.

Roger’s experience has involved project managing and driving through significant and complex changes within DB, DC and Hybrid pension arrangements. As Chair of Trustees, he has overseen successful de-risking exercises and corporate restructurings, scheme mergers, funding issues involving progressive investment strategies and employer covenant implementations.

Roger has considerable experience of working with trustees and has assumed the role and responsibility of independent trustee on many trustee boards, in most cases as Chair. He also Chairs investment sub-committees. He sat on Standard Life’s Independent Governance Committee (IGC) for four years until 2019 and is Chair of two authorised DC Master Trusts: Creative Pension Trust and Cushon Master Trust; he is also co-trustee to the Workers’ Pension Trust.

Roger adopts a working style that is collaborative and enjoys open and collegiate relationships with fellow trustees. He encourages input from everyone to ensure fully informed and timely decision making. He is structured and methodical in his approach to projects and meetings and ensures that all actions that need to be addressed and taken at meetings, are taken by the time the meeting has closed, and that an effective process for driving and monitoring required activity between meetings is in place.

He builds and maintains strong, effective long-term relationships with sponsoring employers and fellow trustees. He puts best practice at the heart of his work and is committed to improving the governance of pension schemes. He is a past President of the Society of Pension Professionals, sits on the Occupational Pensions Stewardship Council and is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

Roger is a fully accredited professional pensions trustee with the Association of Professional Pension Trustees.

“Since being appointed in 2013 Roger has acted as Chair to the Trust Board – bringing to the table a comprehensive knowledge of the pensions industry. This has supported the Board in ensuring that they not only comply with existing legislation but also take steps to keep well informed about forthcoming changes – be it the formation of an IRM policy, legislative, or the increasing focus on ESG risks.”
